About Clay Tile : Clay Imports developed our “Encaustic Pattern Clay” line, to simulate the look of cement tiles immediately following insulation, with a mild sheen. We produced this line by applying a decorative glaze layer on top of a durable clay body then firing the tile at a high temperature. The firing process makes this produce resilient to moisture absorption. Therefore, they do not need to be sealed (low maintenance tile) and will not patina. Though they are also handmade and include great handmade characteristics, they are easier to care for than popular cement tiles and significantly easier to installer. If you are looking for a low maintenance tile, then go with Encaustic Pattern Clay.

17th Century, Portuguese Tile Pattern

Azulejos polychrome mural composed by 36 tiles in a 6 by 6 module. Produced in Lisbon, mid-17th century. During the 17th century Lisbon’s potteries were inspired by Italian-Flemish tapestries to produced various geometric and foliage decoration patterns requested by nobles and churches. Portugal set the taste for monumental ceramic tile applications in churches and palaces, covering entire walls and sometimes even ceilings. Before the 18th century golden age of Portuguese tiles it was very expensive to order only major compositions, suitable for each space. Repeating tiles where chosen as they easily adjusted those spaces. The tiles are set on a wooden frame placed together with white based silicone. More tiles or frieze tiles can be added to augment its size. This pattern is present in the National Tile Museum collection, item n 3097/1000
