Tree of Life Shetland Shawl PDF Knitting Pattern

Tree of Life Shetland Shawl PDF Knitting Pattern

This shawl was knitted as a personal piece for family, and so this pattern is pulled together from my notes and photos taken over the two years that I worked on it off and on. The shawl is knitted in one piece starting with a centre square knit corner to corner. Stitches are picked up around this square and the border is knit in a circular fashion, and finally the lace edging is knit around and onto the border. The traditional lace patterns are knit on a garter stitch ground, which means that in the border section some lace stitches are knitted purl-wise. Most of the motifs are lace every other row, however some are lace every row. As this pattern is being written as an afterthought, and because of the nature of the knitting as described above, I would say this shawl is for the experienced lace knitter. I have not provided row by row written instructions for the charts. The blocked and relaxed piece as knitted measured approximately 106cm square, but the final size will vary according to your own choice of yarn and needle, as well as your own knitting tension. Requirements 2.5mm US1.5 knitting needles, or your preferred sizes for knitting your laceweight yarn. 100g 1200m/1312 yds of laceweight yarn. I had 3g left over. Stitch markers – both split ring and regular including 1 unique one to mark start of round. Others as required to mark repeats in the lace. Wool needle to sew in ends. Blocking wires and pins.

The Shetland Stars Square Shawl (PDF) like in OUTLANDER episode9

The Shetland Stars Square Shawl (PDF) like in OUTLANDER episode9

A fine lace square shawl in Shetland pattern. The main feature are the stars in the border. This pattern is written according to a shawl seen in the OUTLANDER series (episode 9 and 12). 15 pages to this pattern. 4 pages with information, tips and instructions 8 pages with charts 3 pages with pictures. Yarn: 4000m or 4374 y 1/16NM Jamieson \u0026 Smith Gossamer 1ply in natural white (preferably a cone) Needle: 2mm / US0 circulars 40cm / 16” and 80/100cm or 32”/ 40” or use straight needles 40cm / 16”. Size: 180 x 180cm or 6’ x 6’ blocked, it might bounce back after blocking a bit. Also: 8 stitch markers, T-pins, blocking kit or frame, waste yarn for Life Lines, towel, suitable detergent, tapestry needle. All rows are knit. Please read the instructions before you start knitting. When you decide to use another yarn, you might need more yarn. Personal knitting tension can severely influence yardage, because it is so large. My shawl took 3952m, so I had 48m spare. That’s only 3gr. I would strongly advise to buy yarn on a cone. That way it reduces the multiple ends to weave in. You can work the whole border in 1 go. Or, when using fine silk yarn, you might end up with a smaller shawl, due to the fact that silk has no stretch. This shawl is worked in ‘Shetland’ Lace: all rows are knit. And every time you turn your work, you get a new ‘front’. You need to remember that, because you’ll find that patterns can start at any row now: front or ‘wrong’ side rows. But… you will have to read the charts from right to left and the next row from left to right. To keep track on which side you’re on, you can start (i.e.) with a pink marker and end with a green marker. Charts are boxed in 10 rows and 10 stitches (or less…) to make it easier to keep track of where you are.

The Grey Shawl pdf

The Grey Shawl pdf

The Grey Shawl is a modern version of the traditonal wrap shawl or ‘Hap’, worn in Shetland for over a hundred years. This can be made in the Grey and Cream lace-weight Shetland 2 Ply Lace shown and makes a beautiful cosy extra layer either in the suggested colours; or it could be made all in white or cream, for a traditional baby shawl or another single colour throughout. This is another of my Ravelry favourited Hap designs made in the modern manner from the knitted centre square outwards. A lovely project for the moderately experienced knitter, please view all the images for details 🙂 The pattern has 14 pages. You can use the UK 9 : 3.5mm : US 4/5 needle for either the Lace or Supreme 2 ply. ————————————————————————————— TECHNICAL ADVICE for all our pdfs – put here just in case, these pages are great and haven’t let us down – (we’re all newish at this too): YOU DO NOT NEED A DROPBOX ACCOUNT- just look for the ‘ … ‘ symbol on the right, click that, and select ‘download’ in the usual way. pdf The Lerwick Lace Shawl eBook ~ Shetland Lace ~ Heirloom Knitting ~ Sharon Miller

pdf The Lerwick Lace Shawl eBook ~ Shetland Lace ~ Heirloom Knitting ~ Sharon Miller

THE LERWICK LACE SHAWL ebook is one I’m very pleased to offer knitters, it is a direct interpretation of a Shetland shawl of about 1890 – 1910. Made of a fine hand-spun 2 ply wool, this came to me in rather a sorry state, with holes and weak areas. However, it was easy to see the high quality of its beautiful design. This sought after small book is now out of print and only available as a .pdf The more I stu
died this lovely shawl the more there was to learn from it and to absorb for future lace projects; so I intend it here to be the basis for a series of related designs that knitters can either work from directly; or, by referring to these examples, gain a clearer understanding of some of the calculations and considerations involved (such as yarn choice, construction method and shaping), so as to be more confident in their own design work. Finally, any serious contemplation of antique Shetland Lace must include considering the woollen thread* from which it was made, and any research into this leads one only to better appreciate the lives and methods involved in sheep-keeping and wool processing in those distant days of over a hundred years ago. Many interesting things of relevance can yet be gleaned from direct reference to 19th \u0026 early 20th century sources so to this end, I have added Appendices concerning ‘Running and Rooing’ Shetland sheep, an ancient, early farming practice that was widespread there until at least the 1950s; and some moving portrayals of Shetland knitters from the 1850s and late 1880s, which are both informative and poignant. Information is given on the pages above as images regarding yarns.
