This listing is for 1 Digital Download of a PDF Knitting Pattern in ENGLISH ONLY (no other languages). This listing is NOT for the finished Tam. If you are looking to purchase the finished tam, click here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/285497623/outlander-tam-scottish-bonnet-hand-knit?ref=shop_home_feat_1&frs=1 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I designed this Scottish Highlands Tam to be a replica of the tams as worn by the characters of the TV show “Outlander”. It is a full “Scottish Bonnet” style tam that can be worn by men or women. This style of Tam was customarily worn by 17th & 18th century Scots. This pattern is best suited to an advanced beginner to intermediate knitter. You’ll need to know how to knit in the round on circular needles using the magic loop method. How to knit, purl, do increases and decreases, how to follow a basic knitting pattern, and how to felt a knitted item. The tam pattern shows instructions for 3 sizes M, L & XL, but also info on how to size up and down one more size if needed. The tam is knit on circular needles (using the magic loop method), and then welt felted (fulled). I’ve included extra photos in the pattern to show how things should look as you go along, as well as a tutorial with photos on how to felt and shape your tam after it is knit. You’ll need approximately 250 yards of a 100% wool yarn, like Knit Picks, Wool of the Andes (or other similar wool) in a worsted weight. You’ll also need 2 circular needles (or interchangeable needles) in size 7 and size 8, a cable that is 40” (for Magic Loop technique), and 1 large eye tapestry needle. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Copyright info: Pattern is the registered copyright of Sandie Russo (KnitzyBlonde) all rights reserved, 2015-2020. This knitting pattern gives full instructions for creating a historically accurate Scots bonnet just like your favorite historical film or TV show. The construction is historically accurate and this pattern makes a great piece for Jacobite, Revolutionary War, or French & Indian War reenactors. The pattern has instructions for custom sizing and felting the bonnet, and notes on the most historically accurate colors. This pattern is worked in the round with approximately 220 yards worsted weight yarn and size 8 double pointed or circular needles. Finished hat diameter is 12 inches at the widest point, though this could be modified, hat band size is adjustable to your measurements. This pattern is a digital download. You will receive a link to download the PDF after purchase. Check out all my items at http://www.etsy.com/shop/RussetLodgeKnits
Scottish keps
This fisherman’s kep or long hat is knitted in the round using either circular knitting needles or sets of double-pointed knitting needles, depending on your preference, so there is no seam and only knit stitches are required. There is a knitted lining which is knitted first, that extends to the depth of the first Celtic knot section, which is turned up to the inside of your knitting once you have knitted that first Celtic knot band. There are some long floats of colour in the pattern and the wool that is not in use should be caught or trapped every few stitches in order to anchor it and avoid long loops inside the hat. The hat is finished with a crocheted Scottish Thistle, for which a tassel or pom pom may be substituted. Some experience of fair isle or stranded colour work is needed for this pattern.
