This warm and soft hat is an essential garment of your winter wardrobe. Norwegian pattern gives a special touch to the hat. And it perfectly fits any style of your clothes. It can also become a great Christmas present to your relatives and friends. Knitting pattern: Aran Messy Bun Hat. As a knitter from the Aran Islands, I know that most hats there are needed to keep you warm and dry: a hat with a hole at the top means you’ll get wet! However, as the Aran style has travelled the world, it has proven capable of adapting to modern fashion, and the Aran Messy Bun Hat is no exception. Designed to let your messy bun or ponytail flow out of the top, this beanie style hat is knit in the round, on two sizes of circular needles, and features criss-crossing cables that rise seamlessly from the brim to the crown. The cabling pattern is not overly complicated, but there is some adjusting of the stitch marker to ensure that the cabling pattern stays seamless throughout. I would consider this a pattern suitable for intermediate knitters. Sizing: The beanie comes in three sizes: Small: Sized for a child: hat circumference 16 inches/41 cm (unworn) Medium: Sized for Adult Woman Small: hat circumference 17 inches/44 cm (unworn) Large: Sized for Adult Woman Large: hat circumference 18 inches/46 cm (unworn) All hats measure 8 inches/20.5 cm from brim to crown. In all hats, the hole at the top measures 7 inches/18 cm in circumference. The ribbing allows for some stretch, and a comfortable fit. Yarn: Suitable for any Aran yarn. However, Aran yarn can vary greatly in thickness: instructions are given on which size would best suit your yarn gauge. The hats shown are knit in: White: 1 skein (100g/3.5 oz, 150m/164 yards) Yarn Vibes Aran weight yarn (100% wool) Pink: ¼ of 1 skein used. 1 skein is (400g/14.11 oz, 800m/875 yards) Aldi So Crafty Aran weight yarn (80% acrylic, 20% wool) Purple: 2 skeins used. 1 skein is (50g/1.76 oz, 75m/82 yards) Drops Nepal (65% Wool, 35% Alpaca) Requirements: 5mm circular needle (US 8) (or a size smaller than needles used to get gauge) 5.5mm circular needle (US 9) (or size needed to get gauge) Stitch marker Cable needle Knitter’s sewing needle/Tapestry needle for weaving in ends I’m a knitter from the Aran Islands and love adapting traditional Aran motifs to work in more modern styles! I am delighted to have my own original designs now available here : )

Hat knitting pattern: instant download pdf. This simple cable cross beanie is knit in the round, on two sizes of circular needles. This would be suitable as a first cable project, given that the cabling pattern is not overly compli
cated. It is a modern take on a traditional Aran motif, creating a hat which combines simplicity and a touch of difference. The hat is sized for an adult, but instructions are given on adjusting the stitch count to create a smaller or larger hat. Gauge is not hugely important for this beanie; the ribbing creates a comfortable fit. I would suggest being guided by the needle size suggested on your Aran wool. Any Aran yarn should be suitable for this pattern, 5 mm needles/US8 and 5.5mm needles/US9 are recommended, but there is some leeway given that Aran yarns can vary a little in thickness. I would suggest being guided by the needle size recommended for the Aran yarn you are using. One 100g skein should be just enough for one hat. I would suggest a requirement of 120 metres/130 yards of yarn. The hat is very forgiving in size, since the ribbing gives it some comfortable stretch; and the length can be adjusted between finishing the cable detail and starting the crown decreases. The hat is seamless, as it is knit in the round, and is super soft and comfortable to wear! It has a lot of stretch since it is ribbed throughout. The beanie measures around 17 inches (43 cm) in circumference (flat, unworn) and 8 1/2 inches (22 cm) from brim to crown (but as I said, it can be adjusted in length as you are knitting). I’m a knitter from the Aran Islands and am delighted to have my own original designs now available here : )

If you would like to purchase a finished hat, please check my shop listings for a finished product! Named for the little town across the lake from where I live, the Birchwood Beanie is my take on that popular store-bought acrylic hat that everyone wears. I wanted a lightweight hat with a beautiful decrease that poufs a bit at the top and looks nice without a pom pom. This is the hat I’ll be running errands in.
