Well big sis wanted a superhero birthday party for her 4th… so what else was there to do but to make superhero capes!!! {You can see her party here} I searched on-line and found a few tid-bits here and there, but nothing that really seemed to help all that much, soooo, we basically started from scratch! Lucky for you, if you ever need to make a superhero cape for your little angel, I saved everything I did right here! The first main decision came down to time and money (doesn’t it always!?). I decided to go with a felt cape versus a shinny material because 1. it is super cheap and 2. it won’t fray so you don’t have to break out the sewing machine! Once I decided that, I gathered the following materials… Materials: Felt by the yard (2ft. cut length per every two capes needed) A pack of assorted color felt sheets for the emblems Spray Adhesive Velcro squares or 1\

I have a bunch of boys at my house. That puts me in the ideal position for designing boy patterns, doesn’t it? I absolutely love it. The only problem though, is that my baby boys keep growing up! This little guy, for example, is turning three years old tomorrow! How can that be?! And he is all about superheroes right now. So with his superhero birthday coming up I thought it was absolutely vital for him to get a shiny new mommy-made cape. He is pleased! And you can be too because today we are sharing the pattern with you! Our super cape is reversible, sturdy, fits up to adult size necks, and it has several ways to safely close it without being a strangulation hazard. (Ribbon ties scare me!) My little guy can put his cape on and off by himself, no phone booths needed! To make your own super cape, here’s what you will need: Pattern pieces for CKC Super Cape (click here to print) 1 yard fabric Your choice of closure (snaps, velcro, buttons, etc) Scissors Pins Instructions: First you will print the pattern pieces (link above) and tape them together. Cut out the cape piece. Fold your fabric in half width-wise, and then again in half width-wise, so it looks like the photo above. This will give us two folds on the left side, one inside the other. Lay the pattern piece on the fold and pin in place. Cut around the curves. This will give us two cape pieces. Note: If you want your cape to be different colors front and back, you can repeat with your second fabric color (1 yard) and it will give you two additional cape pieces. You can now make two reversible capes! I chose to do red on one side and black on the other, for my boys’ two favorite superheroes. I was planning to put a symbol on the red side until my older son pointed out that superman has a symbol on his chest, not on his cape. Good point. Let’s continue… Place your two cape layers on a flat surface with right sides facing. Pin in place all around the edges. Then sew along the pinned edges and curves, leaving a 4\

What do you do when your 2 year old grandson appears on Skype and asks you to please make a superhero cape for him? First you find a free sewing pattern for a superhero cape courtesy of Google. The pattern I found at threadridinghood.com comes in two sizes – for toddlers up to 4 years. It was easy to print the pieces of the pattern and tape them together ready for cutting out. There is also a clear step by step tutorial on the website here on how to make it up. Then you dash off to the fabric shop and buy some bright red fabric. Home again you search through your boxes of fabric that you can’t bear to throw away because you might use them one day and you find that red lining that you’ve had for 20 years. Actually its even longer than that! And it matches perfectly. Then a Google search for an image of a superhero symbol to applique onto the back of the cape. The request was for a Lightning McQueen cape, but I had decided to make two capes, one for a friend to wear or for a little sister or brother when they got a bit bigger. The Superman symbol seemed simpler than some of the others to use for machine applique. Since I have two grandsons aged 2 and I wanted to make two capes for each one, the one cape I was originally asked to make became 4! (The capes were a nice red and not that funny bluish colour!) Jake flies around in his superhero cape until he’s red in the face and ready to drop while Lila, complete with dummy, unpacks the dishwasher. Supergirl! P.S. Liam prefers to carefully fix the cape around Grandpa’s neck and then watch him fly around the basketball court. I laughed so hard I missed taking that photo.
