Tessellating Blossoms Patchwork Quilt Block Pattern

Tessellating Blossoms is a four-petal floral motif that interlocks with itself to form a continuous design. (A tessellation is a shape that can be repeated indefinitely without any gaps or overlaps.) The block that the quilt is built from is 8 inches square when finished, but the full floral motif spans a 12-inch square as the tips of the petals extend into the adjacent blocks or the border. These dimensions can be scaled down or up, if desired, so that the blossoms are a nice size relative to the size quilt you wish to make. This design concept did not originate with me, and I’m not aware of its beginnings. A paper foundation piecing pattern that creates a four-pointed star shape in the center of the blossom, called Dogwood Blossoms Quilt Pattern, can be purchased at equiltpatterns.com. My approach is purely patchwork, incorporating a diamond shape in the center of the blossom. I’ve also seen this design concept made with no blossom center, which is an option in these instructions, especially if you want to reduce the scale from the measurements I chose for my sample quilt. Using the coloring page provided, careful advance planning of your color scheme and fabric placement is essential for successfully sewing this intermediate level level paper piecing pattern.
