Midges and Nymphs: Every year we at Fly Fishing Extras have the challenge of Chris-Midge. First and foremost, there’s creating the midge itself. Fortunately, midges come in a wide variety of sizes, colors and inhabit a multitude of different types of water. This set of 3 ‘Chris-Midges\

Trout flies: Midges are one of the most important food sources for trout and therefore a common pattern used by trout fly fishers. Midges are active all year round, including on sunny warm days during the winter months. Chris-midges are tied on #18 and #20 hooks with a variety of electro-colored wire reflective of this festive season. They can be fished on their own or as a dropper (tied behind another nymph) 14” to 18” below a weight and then dead drifted on a short line (high sticking if you’re familiar with that technique). Typically, midges are fished in the morning, but depending on the time of year they can also be fished throughout the day. I suggest using a 5X fluorocarbon tippet or smaller depending on the water. These midges should fish well on any tail-water or open stream/river all year long, so you won’t have to wait for the holidays to get the best that these Chris-Midges have to offer!
