This simple rib hat is a great basic for everyone’s winter wardrobe…. baby, boys, girls, teens, men and women! Turn up the rib for a fitted hat with a double layer cuff, or wear it unfolded and tall for a young contemporary look. This pattern is written for DK / US light worsted yarns…. if you would like to knit an Aran (US Worsted) or Chunky (US Bulky) Mikki Hat these instructions are available as separate knitting patterns. A simple knit is perfect project for new knitters, and a relaxing knit for experienced knitters! Detailed row by row instructions for each size make this pattern super easy! I also have free KNITTING TECHNIQUE VIDEOS! Head over to my LINDA WHALEY KNIT STUDIO YouTube Channel for additional help with these simple stitches… and how-to to sew up a completely invisible seam (for those of you knitting flat and seamed). If you love my videos it would be great if you could subscribe to my YouTube channel (it’s free) as every click helps my little knit studio to grow. Thank you. Separate detailed instructions are included to knit this hat either FLAT on a pair of SINGLE POINTED needles / or IN THE ROUND on DPNs Detailed row by row instructions for each size make this pattern super easy! These MIKKI ribbed hats shown here have been knitted in Debbie Bliss Rialto DK and Sirdar Snuggly Cashmere Merino DK on 3.25mm (US3) As this hat is knitted in rib it requires a smaller needle than the standard size recommended for DK (US Light worsted) yarns. This smaller needle size will give you a neat rib with elasticity and memory (it will bounce back). The hats sizes are written using the tension of this smaller needle Other recommend DK merino yarns are: Sublime Extra Fine Merino DK, Rico Essentials DK, Valley Yarns Superwash Merino DK Due to the elasticity of this rib structure, the hat is very narrow when lying flat and stretches for a snug fit. The best fit for this hat is when the hat is stretched between the smallest and largest of its stretch capability. The sizes have been carefully worked out so they should be a great fit the ages listed below. Knitting pattern: instant download pdf. This simple cable beanie is knit in the round, on one size of circular needles. This would be suitable as a first cable project, given that the cabling pattern is not overly complicated. It is a modern take on a traditional Aran motif, creating a hat which combines simplicity and a touch of difference. The hat is sized for an adult, but instructions are given on adjusting the stitch count to create a smaller or larger hat. Gauge is not hugely important for this beanie; the ribbing creates a comfortable fit. I would suggest being guided by the needle size suggested on your Aran wool. Any Aran yarn should be suitable for this pattern, 5 mm needles/US8 are recommended, but there is some leeway given that Aran yarns can vary a little in thickness. I would suggest being guided by the needle size recommended for the Aran yarn you are using. One 100g skein should be just enough for one hat. You might knit this hat from one skein, depending on its yardage. (e.g. the self-striping hats pictured were each knit from one 50g skein of Adriafil Zebrino yarn, but this has a generous yardage of 125m compared to many 50g skeins). I would suggest a requirement of 100 metres/110 yards of yarn. The hat is very forgiving in size, since the ribbing gives it some comfortable stretch; and the length can be adjusted between finishing the cable detail and starting the crown decreases. The hat is seamless, as it is knit in the round, and is super soft and comfortable to wear! It has a lot of stretch since it is ribbed throughout. The beanie measures around 19 inches (48 cm) in circumference (flat, unworn) and 8 1/2 inches (22 cm) from brim to crown (but as I said, it can be adjusted in length as you are knitting). I’m a knitter from the Aran Islands and am delighted to have my own original designs now available here : )
