You will need Worsted or Medium weight yarn and US size 7-8 / 4,5-5mm knitting needles, and a tapestry needle or crochet hook to weave in the yarn ends and also the same tapestry needle to graft stitches at the back of the bonnet (that is easy – link to awesome grafting tutorial inside the pattern!) you will need up to 70 grams of yarn for the smallest size, up to 90 grams for 6-12m size, up to 110 grams for 12-24m size, up to 130 grams for 2-4 years and up to 150 grams of yarn for 4+ size. one part of the balaclava is knit flat, the other part is knit in the round. you will need either a long circular needle (magic loop knitting! yes, and there is a link to an awesome magic loop knitting too!) or five double pointed needles (i have done all the math – there it says how many stitches on each needle works best!) for the part that is knit in the round. for the flat part you can use any length circular needles or any single pointed or long Afghan needles. This listing is for a crochet pattern for a dinosaur hood or dragon hood. It works for both! Sometimes called a cowl or scoodie, these animal hoods are very popular with children in the cold weather. This crochet pattern uses UK crochet terms. A version using US terms is also available in our shop. ******************************************* HAT \u0026 SCARF This dinosaur hood, sometimes called a dinosaur cowl or even scoodie, is a great cosy hat and scarf all in one. It slips over the head easily, is super soft and snuggly and will keep out a cold wind, and even light rain. and how fun are the spikes \u0026 tail! SIZING Instructions are given for six different sizes of dinosaur hood, from baby to adult. The baby size can also be used to fit a doll so your child and their toy can have matching animal heads! YARN This pattern uses chunky yarn so this pattern crochets up fast. We used DROPS Eskimo for the one you see in the pictures. HOOK SIZE Using chunky yarn, we recommend a 9mm hook for the main hood pattern and a 6.5mm hook for the spikes and tails. COLOURS Choose whichever colours you like! We’ve gone for traditional dinosaur colours but you could easily turn this into a dragon hood or dragon cowl by using other colours. Perhaps red with orange spikes! One of our customers crocheted hers in light grey with bright pink spikes and tail for her daughter!
