This wrap is perfect for cool summer evenings when you want to get cozy. I used cotton and merino yarn, which is great for spring and summer projects. This wrap has a rectangle shape and it is knit flat in rows from the bottom up. The wrap has garter stitch borders on its sides and features a lace pattern in the middle – large diamonds and delicate lace stripes.

Crochet wraps are like shawls, but bigger. More rectangle-like, more poncho-like. Am I right? They can be whatever you want them to be!

The blanket coat is this autumn’s cosiest trend. These chunky capes seen in checks, stripes or aztec prints are great thrown on over any outfit come rain or shine. And seeing as it’s highly unlikely I’ll ever be able to afford the original Burberry Prosum monogrammed cape, seen on Cara and Jourdan in the AW14 show, I thought I’d have a go at making my own for a little cheaper… I found this luxurious tweed woven material at my local fabric store and just had to make something using it. There was a black and white version too so I picked a couple of meters of each up. I experimented with a few design ideas using pattern paper. In the end this shape seemed to work the best and fitted how I wanted to it. If you want to make your own or want to see how I styled mine up read on … I used… Approx 2 meters of chosen fabric Scissors Thread Sewing machine Pins Tape measure Binding tape (optional) Cup of tea (recommended) The cape is a large rectangle, so I measured out 55 inches wide by 65 inches long and cut out. I then measured half way along the width on one side and measured straight down 30 inches and cut, to create the neckline. Then it was time to get out the sewing machine. To finish nicely I overstitched all the raw edges then turned them over to the inside about 1cm and stitched for a neat edge. I stitched all the way round the edge and neckline. I curved the neckline cut to a U shape at the top and reinforced it with a bit of black binding tape before turni
ng it under. And that’s it! Simple right?! I really want to try making ones with extra tassels or a clasp at the top but for now I am styling mine up with a fur collar I bought last year from Topshop and holding it all together with a black belt. My handmade version was cheaper than most capes on the highstreet at the moment and only took a few hours to make one night after work! It’s so easy, even if you aren’t that experienced with sewing, why not have a go yourself and surprise yourself at what you can make. I would love to hear your comments and if you have made anything similar. Tweet me or follow me on Instagram and if you love Pinterest check out my Style board for more blanket capes to lust over! Materials: 6.5 mm K crochet hook 1,062 yards of worsted weight yarn in colors of your choice. (Note: the darker brown yarn in the wrap shown is actually DK weight, but this particular yarn was almost identical in weight/thickness to the other colors) Tapestry needle Scissors Removable stitch marker Sizing: 22 inches wide 62 inches tall Instructions For C2C Width Increase Portion (increase on both sides): Row 1: Ch 6, then work a dc into the 4th ch from the hook. Work a dc into each of the next 2 ch. Row 2: Ch 6. Work a dc into the 4th ch from the hook and in each of the next 2 ch. Slip stitch into the 3rd dc stitch to join the two blocks together. You’ll need to flip the block a bit to get to the right spot. Just make sure your tail is pointing downward and you’ll be in the right position. Ch 3, then work 3 dc into the turning ch space. Row 3: Ch 6 (you may need to turn things a bit so that the tail is facing downward again). Work a dc into the 4th ch from the hook and in each of the next 2 ch. Slip stitch into the turning chain space of the next block to join the two blocks together. You’ll need to flip the block a bit to get to the right spot. Just make sure your tail is pointing downward and you’ll be in the right position. *Ch 3, then work 3 dc into the turning ch space and slip stitch into the turning chain space to join the two blocks together. Repeat from * across. When you work the last block, you won’t need to slip stitch it into anything, simply move onto the next row. Repeat row 3 until your wrap is the width you’d like it to be (wrap pictured is inches wide), then move on to part 2. Instructions For C2C Height Increase Portion (increase on one side, decrease on the other): Note: To keep me from getting my sides mixed up, I placed a stitch marker on the side where I decreased. Row 1: Ch 6, then work a dc into the fourth ch from the hook. Work a dc in each of the next two chains, then join with a slip stitch to connect the two blocks together. Work (3 dc, ch 1) and join blocks with a slip stitch in each ch 1 space across until just before the last space (turning chain space). At the end of the row, join into the last block with a slip stitch. Turn and work a slip stitch in each stitch across the first block of the row. Continue across the row in this manner, working the increase at the beginning of the row and decreasing (where stitch marker is) at the end of the row. Repeat until the shawlette is as tall as you like, I worked my height to about inches tall. Instructions for C2C Decrease Portion (decrease on both sides): Row 1: Turn the work and slip stitch in each stitch across the first block, and slip stitch into the turning chain space. *Ch 3, then work 3 dc into the turning ch space. Join into the next block with a slip stitch. Repeat from * to end of row. Repeat row 1 of the decrease until just a top point remains. Fasten off and weave in ends that remain. Note: if the top is challenging for you, be sure to check out the video for this part (or any other part) to see me walk through it step by step! Weave in any ends that remain and you’re finished! © Jennifer Dickerson 2021 For more fun projects and pretty patterns, be sure to follow Fiber Flux on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest for the latest updates!
